Paris, the mid-’90s. My band at the time played out of my bedroom in my parents’ apartment. We were called The Kave. Or was it Funky Pizza?

One day our drummer, my friend Frédéric Deverre, came to me with the lyrics. I put them to music, and so was born La dernière goutte, a fan favourite.

It’s one of the only songs I have in French, and to this day I’m not quite sure what it’s about.

You can hear the band on the ’90s demo: Fred on drums (electronic ones, which you might notice), Julien on bass, Isabelle singing and me on keyboards.

In 2014 I recorded it again, this time singing it myself, in a more standard arrangement. I love the bass line I came up with for that version.

For the release, I sang it once more and gave it a reggae feel.

Three versions, three decades.
