Austin, TX, late ’90s. Ethan Andrus and I spent eighteen months turning his two-car garage into a recording studio. Every morning at 7 a.m.: a bacon-and-egg taco, a half pint of chocolate milk, and two hours of building before heading to my day job at South by Southwest.
Eventually, we had all the gear and a finished studio. I mostly managed to stay out of it.
I finally overcame my procrastination and put a recording session together with my friend Chris Happel, of the Sandblasters. He brought his fretless bass over and laid down a part on a song I’d been working on. I loved the funkiness of it, mixed with those dreamy, cinematic interludes.
Somewhere over the years, the file seems to have suffered. Last month I gave it the Suno treatment. I’m pretty happy with what came back—especially the second half.
